What is Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D is essential for regulating the body’s calcium and phosphate levels, with these nutrients being vital for healthy muscles, bones and teeth. Vitamin D is typically created in the body following direct exposure to sunlight on the skin when outdoors. However, during low sunlight months, the body often can’t get enough vitamin D from the sun alone. This is also common throughout the year if you have dark skin, you spend little time outdoors, or you often wear clothes that cover up most of your skin when you are outdoors. Similarly, a Vitamin D supplement should be considered for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those with a Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D in the form of D3 (cholecalciferol) is the variant found in animals, with D2 deriving from plants. Vitamin D3 can also be found in some fatty animal-sourced foods such as egg yolk and fish oil. The Vitamin D3 in these capsules derive from lanolin found in sheep’s wool. Studies have shown that this D3 variant produces a higher concentration of the vitamin in the blood and this level will be sustained for longer than D2.

How much Vitamin D3 should I take?

For a healthy body, the minimum recommended daily amount of Vitamin D is 600 IU (International Units), with 800-1000 IU being optimal. Each of these capsules contain 1000UI of Vitamin D3, providing you with a full healthy dose of this essential vitamin. You don’t have to worry about overdosing this vitamin as it isn’t possible; your skin will simply adjust natural production if you’re getting all the Vitamin D you require.
