What is Pantoprazole and what is it used for?

Pantoprazole is a medication to treat acid-related conditions of the stomach and intestine such as acid reflux, also known as heartburn. It contains the active ingredient pantoprazole, which belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors that work to relieve the symptoms associated with the disease including a burning pain felt in the chest.

What is Acid Reflux (GORD)?

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), the more severe form of acid reflux, is when acid from the stomach finds its way through the oesophagus and into the mouth. Normally, there is a barrier called a sphincter between the stomach and the gullet to prevent the acid from escaping from the stomach, but this barrier is impaired in GORD. The acid in the oesophagus causes a burning sensation in the chest we call heartburn.

How does it work?

Pantoprazole and the other proton pump inhibitor drugs reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces, thereby also decreasing the symptoms caused by the acid flowing back into the throat.

How should I take Pantoprazole?

The recommended dose for adults is one tablet daily before a meal for about 4 weeks and up to 8 weeks if the condition is not completely healed. Make sure you do not to break or chew the tablets, as this would reduce its effectivity. The best time to take the Pantoprazole tablet is in the morning.
