What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 is a type of fatty acid commonly found in oily fish. It is extracted from fish tissue, and usually comes from fish such as herring, tuna, anchovies and mackerel. Fish oil contains two main omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These two fatty acids have a broad range of health benefits.

There is evidence to suggest that ample fish oil consumption reduces a number of risk factors for heart disease. It increases “good” HDL cholesterol, helps prevent the plaques that cause arteries to harden, and reduces blood pressure in people with elevated levels. There is also reason to believe fish oil is good for the mind: some studies show that people with mental illnesses have lower omega-3 levels, and that fish oil supplements can reduce the chance of psychotic disorders in people at risk.
